I love scary movies, it's true. Supernatural thrillers are my genre. I don't like gore fest type thrillers, because they make me nauseous, but I do love movies that involve vengeful ghosts, demonic forces or any manner of things that go bump in the night. I am telling you this because for Christmas, my sister gave me a DVD of The Conjuring, and five months later it is still scaring the crap out of me.
The Conjuring is loosely based on a 'true story', which is Hollywood code for
Super Scary. It is about a family with 4 daughters that move into a run down farm house and set about living a nice life, however their plans are hampered by a truly horrible ghost that is already living in the farm house. She is so scary that several other ghosts that live in the house are also scared of her. A paranormal investigative team (not Ghost busters! These guys are legit, they investigated The Amityville Horror) try and help them, and the ghost turns on them as well.
Anyway, the 4 girls play a game called 'Clap and Hide', where they blindfold one and the others hide, occasionally clapping their hands so the blindfolded one can find them. So fun! Until the scary as shit ghost joins in. In one scene the mum is trapped in a spooky secret basement, and is huddled, whimpering, at the top of the stairs. Just before the lights go out we see that freaky ghost clap her skanky hands next to the mum's ears, and whisper 'clap clap!' It's giving me goosebumps just thinking about it. It has given me goosebumps every night since when I am suddenly scared of the dark and cannot go downstairs to turn the lights out and lock up.
So, if you enjoy scary movies I heartily recommend The Conjuring for maximum scare per dollar!
Other movies that are at the top of my Freaking ME OUT scary movie list are;
It, based on the novel by Stephen King. Stephen King apparently has no recollection of writing this book, but claims to have done so in 3 days whilst under the influence of cocaine. Pennywise the Clown has a lot to answer for, namely my fear of clowns. Hideous, child eating, clowns.
The Ring. One of my daughter's school friends rang her sister after the sister watched this movie, saying
'seven dayyyyyys' which I thought was really funny but if someone did it to me I would literally crap my pants. If you haven't seen the movie, 7 days is how long you have to live after watching the cursed video of the scary girl climbing out of your TV.
The Grudge. This Japanese film has apparently been made several times in Japan, by the same film maker who is obsessed with the story about a ghost woman with a severe hair situation living secretly in the ceiling. I saw the American version, starring Sarah Michelle Geller, who I love for her portrayal of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But the movie is still terrifying. (Buffy does not play the part of the ghost woman)
The Exorcist. An oldie but a goody, this movie never fails at it's completion to make me run down the hall and leap into bed from the doorway, in case something underneath the bed might grab my ankle if I where to stand too close. I have to sleep with the light on after this one.
Paranormal Activity. This is freaky deaky scary because like The Blair Witch Project, the style of footage allows you to think that this is real. Very, very real. So real you forget it's a movie and start thinking it's a documentary about an evil spirit stealing a baby.
Why do I like scary movies so much? Is it the thrill of being terrified? The adrenaline rush of being super scared but in a safe environment? Maybe, I'm not a psychologist. I just like them.
Do you like scary movies? Tell me your favourite!
