22 ways with Bolognaise

Spaghetti Bolognaise must be one of Australia's favourite meals, and I am sure it is eaten in your house at least once a month - or more often if your children are anything like mine. Strangely, I did not grow up eating Spag Bol and didn't even taste it until I was in my teens. These days I could make it in my sleep! I always make extra for the freezer, because it is so handy to have ready to go, but sometimes I just want to mix it up a little, you know? I thought I would put this list together to inspire both of us.

  1. Pasta Bake. Well der. I couldn't leave it out!
  2. Eggplant Moussaka. A layer of eggplant, a layer of bol, a layer of bechemal sauce.
  3. Potato Moussaka. As above, but replace eggplant with thick slices of steamed potato. Great for children (or adults!) that dislike the poor maligned eggplant.
  4. Nachos. Mix in some kidney beans and you are good to go. Don't forget the avocado!
  5. Tacos. Mix through some chili first, or serve chili separately. Does anyone use any other kind of sauce for Taco night?
  6. Burritos. I like to offer bolognaise along side home made re-fried beans for custom burritos.
  7. Chili con Carne. Mix in some kidney beans and chili, serve over rice, top with sour cream and chopped shallots.
  8. Spooned over baked jacket potatoes, top with sour cream and shallots. Remember those baked potato shops in the '80s? Whatever happened to them?
  9. As a pie filling, with a pastry or mashed potato top
  10. Mix through some mushrooms, sour cream and serve over rice, kind of like pretend stroganoff.
  11. Jaffle filling. Made in a handy Breville or the giant tong like camping implements.
  12. Lasagna. So much easier when one of the sauces is already done.
  13. Use it to stuff mushrooms, top with cheese and bake. Serve with salad.
  14. Stir in chili, mix with fettuccine and top with chopped bacon and parsley.
  15. Pizza topping for the win! My children love this.
  16. Mixed through steamed veggies, topped with bechemal sauce and baked. Make a face on the top with some olives.
  17. Use with store bought puff pastry to make make parcels, serve with a salad. So fancy.
  18. Serve with mashed potatoes and steamed peas. Another favourite with my children.
  19. Make Spaghetti Pie - combine with leftover pasta in a pie plate, top with cheese and bake. Great served hot or cold.
  20. Use to stuff capsicums before roasting for 30 minutes.
  21. Stir through a few large spoonfuls to enrich a creamy risotto, smother in parmesan and chopped parsley.
  22. Use it as a sauce to top cheese cannelloni before sprinkling with cheese and baking in the oven.

Can you think of any more ways to enjoy the humble spag bol? Originally this was supposed to be a list of 10  but it just kept growing, I'm sure you could think up some things to add!

Happy Cooking!
