Dogs; Large or Small?

These holidays, we are minding our neighbours dogs for a few weeks. Ruby is a cavalier king Charles spaniel, and Sadie is her half poodle love child. Although they are normally yappy little things, they must like the constant company they get here, and they hardly bark at all. Until it is time for them to go home and sleep in their normal beds, and then there is a long chorus of goodnight.

As regular readers will know we have a much loved lady Labrador, Kora. She is a little quizzical of these guests but is very lady like and hospitable. There is the occasional concerned look of  'But I'm still your favourite girl, right?" but she has not been at all aggressive. Such a lady.

Although Kora is indeed my favourite girl dog, I have always wanted a smaller dog. They are so cute, and easy to cart around, and pick up and cuddle I say. Can't we have a Pug or a French Bull Dog? Please? Mr BC looks resolute and says NO, we CANNOT.  Which is annoying frankly, because he is not the boss of me or my pet selection.

However, since we have hosted Ruby and Sadie, he has changed his tune! He's noticed how the boys interact with them, picking them up for a cuddle. They love Kora but no way in hell can they pick her up. He is starting to come around a bit on the subject of having a smaller dog...............

Which is a shame, because I have also changed my tune, and no longer think it is such an appealing thing at all! When I am at my desk they scuttle over my feet like hairy cockroaches. Ugh! Ruby in particular is the same colour as the floorboards and I am constantly tripping over her. Plus, she smells. I don't know if it is her diet, but despite being washed twice, she is rank. Sadie has no problem not only jumping onto the couch (something Kora does, naughty girl!) She will also run onto you and up onto your shoulder! Like a freaky miniature mountain goat! I cannot like this. At least Kora has the good grace to hide her guilty face and try not to bring attention to herself when she joins us on the couch.

Is is all in the training? Or all in the breed? Are you a dog lover? Do you recommend a small or large dog? Or do you love cats? The Gentleman has been asking for a feline friend.....

xx
