Halloween Inspiration

In Australia, many people believe that Halloween should not be celebrated, because it isn't part of our 'culture'. The main 2 arguments seem to be;

A - it's not Australian, it's American and it should stay there. Well, look - we embrace many aspects of so called American culture, and we do so happily. McDonalds do not seem to be going out of business here in Oz last time I looked. I bet you also like cable TV, BBQ Ribs, and Real Housewives of Somewhere, not to mention your SUV, and these all originated in America, as did your iPhone! You might also be interested to know that Halloween is celebrated in Europe as well. Hmmm, so not just the US after all?

B - it's not right to celebrate witches and things like that. This seems to be some sort of intolerant argument against non-christian beliefs, and while it's true that the origins of Halloween go centuries back to ancient (and even current) pagan beliefs, many people, pagan and christian alike, seem to like Halloween for the fun factor alone. I bet those people and many others also like to celebrate Christmas by coming together with their friends and family, without once going to church. Such heathens!

So I say LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE! It's a bit of FUN! Let's be HAPPY, damn it!! How will you celebrate Halloween this year? I like the idea of trick or treating, but not without a supervising adult to go along (and take a candy tax for their trouble off the children once they get home.) I also kind of think if the kids are old enough to not need an adult to go along, then they are too old for trick or treating. Call me a cranky old witch, but I'd actually rather host a creepy little gathering at home.

I've been trawling Pinterest for inspiration (of course) and it seems having fun on Halloween is not very difficult to do.

First, get creative with your pumpkin

If you don't want to carve it, bling it.

Get a bowl of lollies
(you don't have to call it candy if you don't want)

And wait for trick or treaters, because you know you will get some.
