I have this dream of living in the country, in some far away rural location, on a large farm. I could garden on a large scale, plant fruit trees, have a dam, have chickens, ducks, geese, goats, horses, the odd rescue donkey or camel. I would have a rambling farmhouse with a big kitchen that would be the heart of my home. I would bottle and preserve and basically live a lovely life. Let me just say that Mr BC grew up working on his uncles farm every school holidays, and he does not share my enthusiasm for a country life. But I can dream, dammit! He is not the boss of me!
ANYWAY. Sometimes that dream extends to homeschooling. Wait, I'm not delusional. Sometimes I think that my children would learn more if they where not distracted by classroom shenanigans. I don't think they would miss out on any social experiences, and I think their education would be more tailored, more focused and more fun.
So sometimes at home when we do educational things that are also fun, it is gratifying for me as well. This is what we have done lately.
Money on the Map.
Do you have one of those jars lying around full of mostly coins from far away countries? We do, and it was fun to go through those coins and look at their differences, then match them to a basic world map that normally lives on the bedroom wall. A bit of a geography lesson mixed with some interesting knowledge about currency. A bit of Good heavens, how awesome to get paper money for pocket money when you where a girl mum! A bit of How on earth do we have a coin from Argentina??
Construction
I hardly ever, ever do this, but it was rainy and Monkey Boy was bored and was having a bit of a Robot moment, so I gave him some sticky tape and he went for it. He had lots of fun and it kept him busy for an hour or so. He was very proud of his results.
Math Dice
I bought this awesome game from the game shop for about $10. You roll the 12 sided dice (die?) with the other dice and the first one to make up the number on the 12 sided dice from the other dice gets to move forward on the game board. This is fast, and fun but what I really love is that the whole nylon waterproof thing comes with it's own drawstring pouch. It's really good for reinforcing The Gentleman's quick addition skills, although it is a tiny bit too advanced for Monkey Boy.
What educational games do you like to play with your children? Do you dream of a country life? How do you think you would go at homeschooling?
